What to know before you buy

Replace or upgrade — decide first

Stock-replacement turbos restore factory performance and reliability on a worn engine. Upgraded (billet-wheel or larger) turbos chase more airflow and only pay off with matching fuel, intercooler, and tune support.

Turbos are the last power mod

Bigger turbos on a stock fuel system and intercooler will disappoint or run into heat-soak. Build the supporting mods first, then add the turbos that need them.

Watch coolant and oil feed lines

EcoBoost turbos are water- and oil-cooled. When replacing turbos, inspect and refresh the feed and return lines and use quality oil on the right interval to protect the new units.

When do EcoBoost turbos need replacing?
Factory EcoBoost turbos are durable and often last well past 150k miles. Replace them when you have shaft play, oil consumption through the turbo, a whistle or rattle that changes with boost, or loss of boost pressure — or when you are upgrading for more power.
Do upgraded turbos need other mods?
Yes. Larger turbos move more air, which demands a bigger intercooler, upgraded charge pipes, a supporting fuel system, and a custom tune. Skipping the supporting mods causes heat-soak, fuel cut, or no real gain over stock turbos.
Can you upgrade just one turbo?
On a twin-turbo EcoBoost you replace or upgrade the turbos as a matched pair so both banks make equal boost. Mismatched turbos cause uneven power delivery and tuning headaches.
